Lanzarote is synonymous with volcanoes, lava fields, and bizarrely shaped rocks, with the black and red of the earth contrasting with the white of the houses, the blue of the sea and sky. The landscape of the easternmost of the Canary Islands is completed by barren mountains with gentle relief, beautiful beaches with white and golden sand, lush palm groves... and silence, because that too belongs to the mysterious landscape of Lanzarote.
On this island – a Biosphere Reserve – you'll find lively tourist centers and small, quiet villages. Besides large hotels and bungalow complexes in coastal towns, there are country inns, agrotourism, and boutique hotels in picturesque inland villages. A comprehensive, high-quality offering that ensures you can have a wonderful vacation here at any time of year and enjoy the exceptional climate.
Green Lagoon
Volcanic Coast
The development of Lanzarote was carried out sustainably and in harmony with the environment. An enormously important contribution to this was made by the universal artist César Manrique, who not only intervened very carefully in the landscape but also knew how to convey love and respect for their land to his fellow islanders. A land where tourism, art, and nature go hand in hand.
Sun and Sea – Pure Relaxation
Besides volcanic landscapes, Lanzarote offers beautiful beaches with white or golden sand and crystal-clear, turquoise water. Here, relaxation is guaranteed. Just like the natural pools that have formed under the protection of lava tongues that flowed into the sea after eruptions, many of these beaches are family-friendly and suitable for children, as they are protected from waves and currents.
But whether you prefer to dive into the waves or take long coastal walks, whether you seek solitude or prefer lively beaches with picturesque marinas full of restaurants, cafés, and shops, you'll find the right spot on this island for a perfect vacation day.
"Just like the natural pools formed under the protection of lava tongues that flowed into the sea after eruptions, many of these beaches are family-friendly and suitable for children."
Inspiring Volcanic Landscapes
Fire Mountains
The volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote awaken unique sensations. They are inspiring, mysterious, enigmatic... They awaken emotions, they fill us with energy. Why is this so? Because they show us the power of nature, because they take us back to our origins?
Questions that are answered at the visitor center of Timanfaya National Park. This national park is the most vivid proof of volcanism on the island, one of the most impressive in the Canarian archipelago. It's a harsh, wild, penetrating landscape where even the striking silence plays a special role. The Fire Mountains can be visited on a guided bus tour. The view over volcanic cones, lava fields, peculiarly shaped rocks... is breathtaking.
Very close to the entrance to the national park is the Echadero de Camellos. The camel park offers the opportunity to explore the almost unreal volcanic landscape from the back of a camel, feeling the wind in your face and experiencing the crunching of lava fragments.
And that's not all, because volcanism is present in every corner of Lanzarote: on the coast, in the fields, in the inland villages. Despite extreme environmental conditions, several generations of islanders have managed to make the best of the seemingly barren land. Yes, only seemingly, because this island hides many surprises under its volcanic mantle.
Fascinating Underground World
On Lanzarote, you can explore a fascinating underground world created by eruptions. Volcanic caves and tunnels have been made accessible to visitors using environmentally friendly, sustainable methods. Places like Jameos del Agua – created by the brilliant artist César Manrique – or the Cueva de los Verdes offer the opportunity to uncover the secrets of the earth's interior.
Jameos del Agua
This volcanic tunnel houses a spectacular natural concert hall and a unique geological formation – a saltwater lake inhabited by small, blind albino crabs that are unique in the world.
Cueva de los Verdes
An impressive lava tube system that extends for kilometers underground, offering visitors a journey through chambers formed by ancient volcanic activity.
A Unique Wine Landscape in the World
The landscape of La Geria is one of the greatest surprises that Lanzarote has to offer. A large area covered with small stones of black volcanic rock that was ejected during the Timanfaya eruptions is used by Lanzarote's winemakers for growing their vines. The volcanic rock is capable of storing nighttime moisture, which is particularly important on an island where there is hardly any rainfall.
In this traditional cultivation method, the vines are also protected from wind by low stone walls, creating a spectacular and unique landscape worldwide. The wines with designation of origin produced here are exceptional and internationally recognized. And the best of all: visitors can taste them in one of the bodegas while enjoying the beauty of the surroundings.
"The landscape of La Geria is one of the greatest surprises that Lanzarote has to offer."
Where Art and Nature Merge
Lanzarote was fortunate to have the brilliant César Manrique, a universal, versatile artist who understood like no other how to combine art and nature. As a convinced conservationist and deeply in love with the island where he was born, he made only extremely careful interventions to improve and create places that can be admired forever.
In Lanzarote, he left a large part of his artistic legacy. Perhaps the most magnificent example is Jameos del Agua, one of the most visited attractions on the island, where Manrique demonstrated all his genius. The Mirador del Río viewpoint is another of Manrique's works. Perfectly integrated into the environment, this natural viewpoint on the impressive cliffs of Famara offers a spectacular view of the Chinijo Archipelago.
Cactus Garden
Artistic botanical wonderland
To admire the complete work of the incomparable artist, you must also visit the Cactus Garden, the San José Castle, and the Farmer's Museum, as well as his house in Taro de Tahíche – now the seat of the César Manrique Foundation – which Manrique himself designed in the middle of a lava flow.
A Paradise for Athletes
Lanzarote has found a place in the training schedules of European elite athletes, especially during the winter months when cold weather on the continent makes it almost impossible to practice outdoor sports.
Running
Cycling
Golf
Water Sports
Running, cycling, golf, all types of water sports... There's no discipline that can't be practiced on Lanzarote. The year-round pleasant climate, privileged landscape, and wide selection of accommodations, facilities, and first-class services meet even the demands of the most discerning athletes. Proof of this are major sporting competitions like the Ironman, one of the toughest triathlons in the world, held on the island.
Villages Among Volcanoes
Yaiza
First European enclave in the Canaries
Teguise
Former capital with historic charm
Haría
Valley of a thousand palms
Since Lanzarote is a somewhat different island, it's expected that the villages here are also somewhat different. The various volcanic eruptions that shaped today's landscape were also significant for settlements where life unfolds among volcanoes and lava. It wasn't easy, but the result is unbeatable, both for locals and for anyone visiting this unusual landscape.
"Yaiza, the first European enclave in the Canary Islands, lies at the edge of the area buried by the Timanfaya volcanic eruptions."
Another place worth visiting is Teguise, once the capital of the island, which as one of the oldest places on Lanzarote has preserved much of its magnificent past. Here also takes place a famous market that attracts thousands of local visitors and tourists every Sunday. Haría is the greenest area of the island, known as the valley of a thousand palms, dotted with typical white houses.
